What is right for you?

IMG_0785
Time and time again I meet people who go through life doing a lot of what they think they should do in spite of the negative impact it has on their lives. I came across such a thing in Romania while I was studying but not at all for the next 16 years of my career. I wonder why is that? I do not remember wanting to do things and not carrying it through. I do not remember postponing  ... because my darlings ... life does not wait! It really doesn't.

It always makes me sad to hear clients feeling utterly depressed and saying ... oh if only i were younger, if only i had .. this, that and the other, if only ... i could change my life. But they talk about it already from a defeated position. Somehow it is as if they gave up before starting. Why? Because of layers and layers of limiting beliefs, layers and layers of stories they told themselves, because of a lack of trying to understand who they really are, what they really want to BE, DO, HAVE......

And I'm not talking about big things really ... let's go to something that we all struggle with ... what do we do to relax? Honestly .. what do you do?

Many people succumb on the coach, in front of the TV, flipping aimlessly from one channel to another .. evening after evening, month after month, year after year. You meet them in coffee shops at the weekend, or queuing to buy some flowers on Saturday afternoon, or pushing big shopping trolleys on Friday evening in supermarkets and hypermarkets. They have a holiday or two per year and dream about retirement when ... they will start to do something wonderful....... start to really live and relax. But this is when many are faced with a big dilemma  ..... they do not know how to really live and relax because this is just like a muscle ... if you don't practice it .. it will not appear out of the blue.

But what if you ask yourself now ... what is right for me? What is right for my soul now? What works in my life? What needs to change? And i wonder how would you life be if you would start asking yourself more often this question .............. Is this (put your own word here) right for me? Does it serve me right? Does it nurture my soul, body and mind? What else do i need? How can I get it now? What are the steps? Life is a journey not a destination my darlings and enjoying the journey is key!

Intuitive painting workshop on June 22nd in Brighton

IMG_4607

Intuitive painting crossed my path a few good years ago when i was getting ready to take a leap of faith, leave a brainwashing, soul destroying  job in London (i'll write more about this in a few days) and become an entrepreneur.

IMG_0699

So what is this intuitive painting all about you might ask me ... it's facing your canvas, board, paper with no expectations at all as to what / how would your painting look like at the end of your painting journey.

IMG_2709

It's painting without getting attached to the outcome, it's allowing your brushes to do the work for you, your fingers (because we will paint with our fingers as well) and a number of other mark making tools to dance in front of you ... their own dance. It helps you paint from the heart and soul and not from the logical brain who says ... a house is a house, a flower is a flower and a dog is a dog. You will give yourself permission to paint their imprint, their aura, their soul and spirit onto the page.

IMG_3641

We are going to use scrapbooking paper, chalk pastels, oil pastels, acrylic paints and  much more. It's play time my darlings!

The  first 30 minutes i will share with you my story ... the story of art and how it found me ... out of the blue, how it helped me heal, recover, get in touch with my intuition and regain my joy of life!.

The power of intention

IMG_0524
Believe is a painting that you can buy as a print right here http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Searching4happiness

Growing up in a Communist country with very limited career opportunities one was not encouraged to dream. Dream about what? With no inclination to become a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher or an economist (one had to learn lots of useless and boring political subjects and this was not palatable at all for many)  ... the option was to become an engineer. Nothing poetic, creative or exciting. Nothing but ... hard work ... for a potentially cushioned position in one of many Communist factories which were still plenty at the beginning of 1990's.

But some people in my country dared to BELIEVE that change was possible, that freedom and democracy was everybody's right. And this ... changed my life and the life of many other Romanians

The truth is that intention is the stepping stone used to create everything around us. I wonder how many times do you dare to dream, do you dare to let your mind WORK FOR YOU and not AGAINST YOU? How many times do you sit in front of a piece of paper with a bunch of juicy pens ... writing, drawing, painting everything that you WANT to BE, DO, HAVE in this life?

Have you ever tried to do this? Have you ever tried to be specific? What has happened? Many people say ... I want to be HAPPY for example. And they stop there. OK ... but what if you go into a bit more detail and describe what happy actually means to you, how would you recognize that ... you are happy now! Why? Because your notion of happy is different from the one of your friends, family and so on.

IMG_4960
And ... if you are not specific .. you will never take the time to create a clear action plan and you might never even start your journey towards achieving your goal.

Just like with tulips for example. Let's suppose you really, really like exotic tulips like the ones in the photo above. Let's suppose you are a collector and would love to obtain new varieties of this .. parrot tulips. If you post an announcement in your favourite magazine asking for tulips .. the probability to get the ones you want are pretty slim. If you go into details and explain exactly what you want, the colour, shape and the story of them ... that's another thing all-together .... your chances of obtaining what you want are quite high.

All it takes is to be clear as to what do you want, to believe that .. you deserve to achieve your goal, that you are enough, that you can always ask for help and that it's about time to start with one baby step ... and another one ... and another one.

So, BELIEVE that what you want to BE, DO, HAVE is possible and start your list now.

Another group of eclectic birds
The foreigners - an original painting

Do you believe in coincidences? Do you believe that some things are meant to happen? I do! Today was a lovely example. It makes me smile, really it does!

A last minute change of plans today meant that I had some free hours and ... "my" Jasper Wood coffee shop came to my mind. The truth is that I wanted to show Christine and Chris, the lovely owners, some of my funky bird paintings ....so why not today?

My birds then became the catalyst for a lovely conversation with one of the coffee shop's loyal customers ... I listened to a beautiful Buddhist story about inner strength, about values and beliefs and had a conversation that I will remember for a long time.

What I've noticed during the two years that Jasper Wood has opened its doors to Eastbourne is  that it has attracted very interesting people, like minded, well travelled, passionate about books, spirituality, ready to interact with each other and ready to share their experiences and passions.

So, today turned out to be the day to  bring everything together and  ... jointly with Christine, Chris and Jim we have agreed to create a new and exciting conversational event called " Salon du Cafe". What is "Salon du Cafe"? It's a series  of gatherings which aim to stimulate conversation around ......a cup of coffee and a cake. When? Every Wednesday morning from 10.00 - 11.30 am. Where? At Jasper Wood coffee shop in Eastbourne of course.

Photo-40

Each event will have a topic to debate, to tell stories about, to share memorable experiences and so on ... we are sure that the Salon will evolve and transform but this is our starting point. Here are the conversational themes for our first three Wednesdays :

* May 22nd - The lost art of conversation

* May 29th - All that is inspirational to yourself

* June 5th - Objects and stories

Do connect with Jasper Wood on Facebook as well .. and get to know some lovely people, some interesting customers.

About labels and who we are

IMG_1088
"We are many people" - available as a print in my Etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/Searching4happiness

Labels ..... every day we are labelled by other people .. he or she is middle class, or working class, he or she is "stupid" or smart, he is bohemian, she is brilliant, he is a marketing person, she is an actor, he is a cleaner, she is an engineer, he is a doctor, she is an artist.

From the moment we are born people try to put each and everyone of us into a classified drawer, "nicely and neatly", with a pretty label so that they will know exactly what to expect from you.

But when 2 labels are applied ... that you are a marketer AND an artist it becomes confusing ...... because you don't quite fit into a typical box with one "neat and pretty label" . And if a third label is added it's chaos in terms of what sort of person you are perceived to be... how can this be ... so many labels on just one person?

Hmmm no no no ... you can only be one type of person... so please let us have just one label for you so that we can find you a pretty little drawer with a pretty little label.

But the reality is that most of us are like Russian dolls ..... we are many people ... we do many things ... we have multiple skills ... we behave differently in different situations .... we are trained "to be" in a variety of fields. This is an asset, not a liability. It should be ok and normal to see people as being multiple characters (each one of whom is fascinating, each one of whom has many stories to tell).

The other day I came across a charming You tube concert with Dudley Moore - at Hollywood bowl "Jazz & Gershwin" from 1984.

I was absolutely mesmerized to see him performing with so much ease, pleasure and passion.  Of course my mind was trying to say ... but, but, but .. Dudley More is .. the fantastic Arthur that makes me laugh every time I see him. He can't also be this gifted pianist!  But he is .. and how brilliant is that!

We definitely are ... many people ... aren't we! I hope you will enjoy the concert as much as I did!

Rejection, spring and raw cinnamon rolls

Competitions are very much part of our lives. We like to watch them, we like to take part in them. It brings quite a lot of excitement to our lives.......... it really does.

Photo-37

8 weeks ago I took the decision to enter a competition organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, a yearly event, and very popular among the Brits ....and not only. Just imagine .... 13,000 people submit their paintings to a committee and only 1000 are lucky enough to be selected for the June exibition.

5 weeks ago I took one of my paintings, The Silk Road, up to London ... and then ... the waiting game started.

At the beginning of the Bank Holiday I learned that .. my painting was not selected. Not this time. Hmmm, of course I was disappointed, but ... next year there will be another competition and I'll take part again that's for sure. And the experience has convinced me to enter into more competitions like this one because .... it's quite exciting and who knows ... I might be lucky!

  Photo-35

But rejection has made me revisit the concept of worthiness ... many of us have our sense of worthiness tied up with what we do, how we look, what we've accomplished, what we win.

It takes a while to realise that our sense of worthiness doesn't come from what we do in life, what we own, where we go on holiday ..... but from our qualities as a human being.

So, in an attempt to nurture my feeling of self-worth this weekend ........ I've decided to cook something new! I really like to experiment with new recipes ... and today .. it was the time for some raw cinnamon rolls based on a recipe from my dear friend Anna.

Just like the truffles I wrote about a few days ago, this recipe is just the beginning of endless variations.

Photo-32

But let's start with the ingredients:

4 tbsp agave nectar

3tbsp raw cacao powder or cocoa powder

Mix well and set aside.

100g finely chopped dates or/and figs/raisins, dry apricots

100g ground almonds or hazelnuts or walnuts (actually you can combine them as well)

Mix together and form a doughy lump. Roll out on ground cinnamon to an elongated rectangle, about 0.5cm thick. Spread the agave cacao mix on top of the flattened dough and roll up from the long side like a Swiss roll. Leave to set in the fridge for a few hours.

The power of kindness

IMG_2772

Resurgence is a bi-monthly magazine published in England .. I have read it for a long time. It's not mainstream in terms of "glitz in the news" but it is absolutely mainstream in terms of how we on this planet work to achieve a sustainable, peaceful world.

The themes Resurgence cover  resonate with my own interests - like environment, social justice, arts, ethical living and more.

The "and more" in the March / April issue is a story that really deserves to be shared. Kindness has long hands, kindness heals the souls of people, kindness restores the trust in the human race. I have re-produced the story below. I really hope you enjoy it, courtesy of course to Resurgence.

"The power of kindness

In 1863, on a spring day in Northern Pennsylvania, a poor boy was selling goods door to door to pay his way through school. He realised he had only a dime left, and that he was hungry. So he decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman appeared at the door.

Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry and so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked "How much do I owe you"

"You don't owe me anything" she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said: "Then I thank you from my heart".

As Howard Kelly left that house, not only did he feel stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strenghtened also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation.

When he heard the name of the town she came from he went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown, he went in to see her. He recognised her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr Kelly requested that the business office pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, and then wrote on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take her the rest of her life to pay it. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read the words:

"PAID IN FULL WITH ONE GLASS OF MILK"

(Signed)

Dr Howard Kelly "

The seed of kindness is in each and every one of us. You don't need to wait for others to be kind to you. You don't need to be kind on special occasions. Kindness is a way of life! Most of all, be kind to yourself!
